Bell’s Palsy

Facial Nerve Paralysis

Bell’s Palsy

What causes Bell’s palsy or facial paralysis?

Bell’s palsy is a weakness, or paralysis, of the muscles that control expression on one side of your face.  This results from damage to a facial nerve, one of which runs beneath each ear, near your jaw joint, to the muscles on the same side of your face.

A lot of times a definitive cause is hard to find.  Viral infections such as herpes simplex virus (HSV) have been associated with Bell’s palsy.  Other causes include:

  1. Birth trauma.
  2. Temporal bone fracture.
  3. Facial trauma.
  4. Diabetes.
  5. Pregnancy.
  6. Acute or chronic otitis media (middle ear infection).
  7. Other infections such as mumps, mononucleosis, Lyme disease, and tuberculosis.
  8. Toxicity from Thalidomide, tetanus, or carbon monoxide.
  9. Tumors such as acoustic neuroma, facial nerve neuroma, fibrous dysplasia, or metastatic tumors from other parts of the body.
  10. Multiple sclerosis, and other causes which are not listed here.

Signs or Symptoms

  • Acute paralysis or weakness on one side of your face Facial droop and difficulty with facial expressions.
  • Facial stiffness.
  • Pain behind or in front of your ear.
  • Headaches.
  • Loss of taste on the front of your tongue.
  • Changes in your production of tears and saliva.

Standard Treatment
The standard treatment is to prescribe a corticosteroid medication like prednisone, and to give time for the nerve to heal.  The downside of using this drug for an extended period is that it produces many side effects, such as osteoporosis, thinning of the skin, suppression of the immune system, adrenal suppression, fluid retention, high blood sugar and eventual diabetes mellitus, to name a few.  Surgical intervention may also be considered.

AK Approach
The nerve that is involved exits the skull near the jaw joint.  Imbalances in the bones of the skull or contractions in the muscles of the jaw can cause excessive pressure on this nerve and lead to this condition.  Testing is done to determine if there are any imbalances in the motion of the cranial bones or in the functioning of the muscles where the nerve exits.  If these are found, very specific corrections are done to remove these stressors, be they in the spine or the skull.

Nutritional testing is also done to ascertain if there are heavy metals or toxic chemicals impeding the healing process of the nerve, as well as any deficiency or excess of blood sugar.  The goal of the nutritional support would be to decrease inflammation, control any swelling and add nutrients known to speed the healing of nerves.

Shoulder Pain – Biceps Tendonitis

Shoulder Pain

Slipped Bicipital Tendon or Biceps Tendonitis:

Caused by:

  • Constant poor posture with rounded shoulders and forward lean.
  • Sleeping on your shoulder.
  • Sleeping on your side with your arm extended over your head.
  • Overhead serves in tennis.

Findings:

  • Spasm of the pectoral or chest muscles, pulling the tendon toward midline.
  • Fascial shortening of the pectoral muscles.

Correction:

  • Stretching the fascia over the pectoral muscles.
  • Resetting the tendon into the bicipital groove.
  • Chiropractic manipulation of the shoulder and spine.
  • Nutritional supplementation to reduce inflammation and support soft tissue.
  • Ice and rest for a week or two before resuming regular activity.

Shoulder Pain – A-C Joint

Shoulder Pain

A-C Joint Sprain

The acromio-clavicular – or A-C – joint of the shoulder is situated between the end of the clavicle and the acromion process of the scapula (see image on right).  When the A-C ligament is sprained or torn, there is pain on the tip of the shoulder, right over the joint.  Pain can also be produced in this area by lifting your arm away from your body past 30 degrees.

Sprain of this joint is caused by:

  • Downward trauma to the shoulder.
  • Shoulder shrug exercises.
  • Sleeping on your side.

What can be done:

  • Correction of weak muscles in front of the shoulder and releasing tight muscles in the back.
  • Chiropractic manipulation of the clavicle, neck and upper back.
  • Nutritional support to reduce inflammation and strengthen ligaments.
  • Surgery is rarely indicated.

Insulin Resistance – not SP

Insulin Resistance

What is insulin resistance?

Insulin resistance is a condition in which the body produces insulin but does not use it properly.  Insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas, helps the body use glucose for energy.  Glucose is a form of sugar that is the body’s main source of energy. The body’s digestive system breaks food down into glucose, which then travels in the bloodstream to cells throughout the body.  Glucose in the blood is called blood glucose, also known as blood sugar.  As the blood glucose level rises after a meal, the pancreas releases insulin to help cells take in and use the glucose. When people are insulin resistant, their muscle, fat, and liver cells do not respond properly to insulin.  As a result, their bodies need more insulin to help glucose enter cells.  The pancreas tries to keep up with this increased demand for insulin by producing more.  Eventually, the pancreas fails to keep up with the body’s need for insulin.  Excess glucose builds up in the bloodstream, setting the stage for diabetes.  Many people with insulin resistance have high levels of both glucose and insulin circulating in their blood at the same time.

Insulin resistance increases the chance of developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease.  Learning about insulin resistance is the first step toward making lifestyle changes that can help prevent diabetes and other health problems.

What causes insulin resistance?
Scientists have identified specific genes that make people more likely to develop insulin resistance and diabetes.  Excess weight and lack of physical activity also contribute to insulin resistance.  Many people with insulin resistance and high blood glucose have other conditions that increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and damage to the heart and blood vessels, also called cardiovascular disease.  These conditions include having excess weight around the waist, high blood pressure, and abnormal levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood.  Having several of these problems is called metabolic syndrome or insulin resistance syndrome, formerly called syndrome X.

Metabolic Syndrome
Metabolic syndrome is defined as the presence of any three of the following conditions:

  • Waist measurement of 40 inches or more for men and 35 inches or more for women.
  • Triglyceride levels of 150 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) or above, or taking medication for elevated triglyceride levels.
  • HDL, or “good,” cholesterol level below 40 mg/dL for men and below 50 mg/dL for women, or taking medication for low HDL levels.
  • Blood pressure levels of 130/85 or above, or taking medication for elevated blood pressure levels.
  • Fasting blood glucose levels of 100 mg/dL or above, or taking medication for elevated blood glucose levels.

Similar definitions have been developed by the World Health Organization and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.

Sacro Occipital Technique

Holistic Health Care

An Introduction to Sacro Occipital Technique

A Perfect Organization ——
A healthy body is a perfect organization of the more than three trillion cells that make it up.  When the whole organism is functioning cooperatively and harmoniously a person is healthy, vital, purposeful and productive.  A healthy body is a perfect harmony of muscles, bones, nerves, organs, glands, blood and hormones working in an efficient, organized way — helping us fulfill our intended purpose in life.  What a perfect organization!

Disorganization Results in Disease
When some part of this perfect organization disintegrates or begins to lose its organic unity in any way, disease of the body begins to take hold. Regardless of where disorganization begins, the whole of the body is affected.  One part cannot be affected alone, that’s because each system is interdependent with the whole.

• Injury – An injury that directly affects the muscles, joints and nerves also causes degeneration to the health of the digestive and hormonal systems.

• Toxins – Exposure to toxins in our food, air and water can lead to the disorganization of organs, glands, muscles and joints of the body.

• Stress – The accumulated stresses of daily living; work, family, traffic and repetitive small traumas also have an affect upon the disintegration of the healthy body systems.  The stress of toxins, poor quality food and the side effects of medicines, can lead to aches and pains, soreness, stiffness and disability.  All the complex nervous system that coordinate the healthy functions of the body are based on an organization that once disrupted results in symptoms, syndromes, dysfunction and disease.  It is this very same disorganized bodily function that brings most people into our office searching for an answer to build their health.

The Healer is an Organizing Influence – Our responsibility at this office is to do a whole body evaluation of your condition and determine where best to begin its reorganization toward the healing results you seek.  In this way we are a health-building organizing influence.  With this healing philosophy in mind we have chosen Sacro Occipital Technique along with Applied Kinesiology (AK), as our whole body approach to health.

Sacro Occipital Technique
Sacro Occipital Technique (SOT) is based upon solid scientific principles.  SOT has been continuously researched throughout its development, beginning in 1925 with one purpose: IMPROVED RESULTS and COMFORT for THE PATIENT.  SOT is a total body approach to holistic health care.  SOT is not merely symptomatic treatment of back and neck pain, headaches, indigestion, sciatica, numbness, tingling, dizziness, insomnia or TMJ problems.  The SOT approach builds total body health by treating the underlying cause of the disorganization in your body.  SOT treatments are gentle, effective and improve the ability of the body to reestablish its own health.

Treating the Cause Not Just the Symptoms
“Distortion analysis is the basis of all primary procedures in SOT and the basic distortion patterns are those involving movement of the pelvic girdle as a whole and they often are the key to the total situation.”  Dr. De Jarnette, 1967

Our focus in SOT – as well as in Applied Kinesiology (AK) – is structural stability.  When the structure is stable the organization of the nervous system becomes stable.  The structural and functional basis of the human musculo-skeletal system is the pelvis.  Upon the pelvis sits the spine, the shoulders, neck and head, and below the pelvis extend our legs and feet.  All of this must be balanced, coordinated and maintained by the pelvic bones and the nerves that extend from there to all the parts of the coordination system.

All of the internal organs are suspended from the ligaments from the spine; all of the nerves coordinating their functions come from the spine.  All the large upper thigh muscles and critical back muscles are attached to this pelvic girdle.  If there is any instability in this pelvic region the AK / SOT doctor will adjust and stabilize these very important structures first and only then will the doctor move to adjusting the alignment the remainder of your body once its foundation is stable and secure.  The pelvis is the foundation and the key.

What to Expect in Our Office Examinations – Finding your SOT Category
Your health history and current health concerns are carefully considered on the first visit.  Using over one hundred indicators specific to SOT examinations are performed with the goal of discovering the underlying cause of your health concerns.  X-rays may be taken as well as laboratory tests made if indicated.  Upon complete consideration of all this information each patient is placed in one of the three categories of treatment.  Once your SOT Category is determined, a specific program of future care will be presented for your consideration.  Treatment will only begin once the doctor and patient achieve a mutual understanding of what the first course of care is to be.

Your First Treatment
Patients appreciate that with SOT there are no painful or fast, jerking motions involved in the treatment.  All the adjustments with SOT are performed very gently, some with the force of gravity, others with no more than four to six ounces of pressure.  Many patients remark that the only thing they feel during and after treatment are the positive results!

Treatment Goals
The goal of our treatment for you is to build your health by being an organizing influence to all aspects of your body and lifestyle.  Treatment frequency, the focus of each individual visit and, suggested lifestyle changes are all made based on the experience of thousands of doctors treating patients with SOT worldwide.  This accumulated experience is a unique benefit of your choice of our office for your healthcare.  Lifestyle changes and nutritional supplementation may also be recommended.

Results
The goal of holistic treatment using AK and SOT is to improve the health and organization of your body, thus bringing about greater overall health, instead of mere symptomatic relief.  Remarkable results have been achieved through the use of SOT.  But remember, symptoms most often are the result of months or years of disintegration of health from a number of sources – not merely the one event that may have brought you into our office.  Long-term response requires a commitment to a holistic health care plan which is taylor-made to you.

SOT and AK can rebuild your vitality to perceptible levels you may not have imagined possible.  This is not because these holistic modalities work miracles, but because the human body is a beautiful and resilient organism able to reach optimum health, thanks to the organizing influence of these holistic techniques.

Holistic Health-Building
We are privileged to offer such a complete health care system as provided by our combining of AK and SOT in our practice.  The scope of treatment includes musculo-skeletal, cranial and the organ systems, Craniopathy and CMRT (Chiropractic Manipulative Reflex Technique) respectively.  CMRT uses reflexes at the base of the skull to analyze and treat visceral (heart, liver, etc.) problems.

Only through many hundreds of hours of study, internship and the experiences of hundreds of thousands of patients treated by doctors throughout the world with AK and SOT are we able to offer this holistic healthcare gift to you, your family and coworkers.
